So…I have been talking about ‘trying’ a red lip like FOREVER. I can’t really explain why the thought of wearing a bold lip freaked me out, but it definitely did. Maybe part of it was because I don’t like change {I usually like to wear neutral glosses}…maybe part of it was because I associated a ‘red lip’ with ‘dance recital make up’…or maybe it was simply because I truly believed I couldn’t pull it off.

Last weekend for Valentine’s Day, my family had a wedding to attend. While sitting in the make up chair at Todd’s Room in Birmingham, Michigan, it took my sister {my Spoonful of Flair counterpart} to tell me to just ‘F*#@ing do it!’ and so I did…and guess what, I loved it! It is truly amazing how glamorous the right shade of red can make you feel.

Here are my tips and tricks to wearing red lipstick, like a boss!

Keep eyes simple: Remember, balance is key! By making a bold statement with your lips, creating an equally bold eye would clash. To avoid this type of situation, use a shadow in a nude/sand tone. You can add metallic or a deeper brown shadow for a little definition {consider the Naked palate from Urban Decay}. Use mascara, but be sure your lashes look clean…and not clumpy.

Exfoliate your lips: It is important to prep your lips before applying red. Prepping appropriately will make your pout better looking and the color last longer. I love the Laura Mercier Lip Silk as an exfoliant!

Ask a professional about shades of red: With so many shades of red available, it can be difficult to choose the right one. Ask a make up artist to match a color based on your natural skin tone as well as the overall look for which you’re trying to achieve.

Be precise: Though using liner sounds dated, it is important when using red lipstick. The liner will define your lip and make it easier to apply the lipstick accurately. DON’T choose a red lip liner! Go for a natural color liner to soften your look.

Consider your outfit: In my opinion, when wearing a loud lip, keep your outfit quiet! Try going for a solid color dress…top…or ensemble to make your lip stand out.

Dare to flair…with a pop of red!

Have fun! xo
